WHAT IS ROLLER
BURNISHING
The Surface of metal parts worked thro' turning, reaming or
boring operations is a succession of "PROJECTIONS" or "PEAKS"
and "INDENTATIONS or VALLEY" when microscopically examined.
(Sec Fig1.) The Roller burnishing operation compresses the
"Projection (Peaks) into the indentation (Valleys) thus
forming a smooth mirror finished surface (as in fig.2). Any
material not exceeding 40 Rockwell Hardness "C" can be roller
burnished.

ADVANTAGES OF ROLLER BURNISHING:
i) ACCURATE SIZE - Parts produced by roller burnishing with
control in size to micron levels with high consistency and
repeats bitty.
ii) SUPERFINE SURFACE FINISH - A very smooth surface finish as
high as 0.05 to 0.2 Ra finish can be obtained thro' Roller
Burnishing when compared to 0.5 to 3.5 Ra finish in operation
such as grinding, reaming, drilling, boring, or turning.
iii) HARDER SURFACE - Cold rolling condenses the grain
structure of metal, producing a hard corrosion resistant
surface. The surface hardness increases 5% to 10% with a
penetration of 0.25 mm to 0.76 mm. This results in increase of
part's wear life, added strength, and improves fatigue
resistance.
iv) SAVES TIME AND LABOUR - The tool processes parts in second
when compared to minutes taken for grinding reaming, horning
or lapping etc., Also a less skilled labour car operate unlike
other operations where labour skill play a more important roll
in finish. Thus the less labour cost and high productivity
saves much of production cost.
v) MONEY SAVER - A part from reducing production cost as above
the ABHI burnishing tools can be mounted on any conventional
lathe or drilling machine thus eliminating high capital
investment on precision machines.
vi) REPLACEABLE WEAR PARTS - Wear parts such as rollers guide
rollers, bearings etc., can be easily replaced in ABH
Burnishing Tools which helps in longer Tools life. A totally
maintenance free tools.
HOW TO GET GOOD RESULTS
Burnishing is a Cold Rolling Process without actual removal a
metal. Hence it is important to control the pre burnishing
stock allowance and surface roughness to desired levels to
obtain ; best burnished surface finish |
